China to host ASEAN meeting

China's defense minister called for efforts to maintain peace and stability of the region continued, but avoid the controversial territorial dispute talks Friday (16/10) when Beijing hosted the meeting of the leaders of the defense of the countries of Southeast Asia.

Chinese leaders allegedly would not respond openly conflicting territorial claims in the informal meeting of defense ministers of the 10 ASEAN member countries.

Some ASEAN countries, most notably the Philippines and Vietnam, have territorial claims that overlap with China in the South China Sea, but Beijing has been reluctant to use such forums to talk about it.

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan not mention the dispute in his opening remarks, but urged Southeast Asian countries to promote better relations and a greater effort to address various security challenges, such as terrorism.
